Huffington Post reported on December 11, 2010 that China urged the United States on Friday to immediately cancel plans for President Barack Obama to meet with the Dalai Lama next week, warning the move could further hurt ties.
Are you freaking kidding me? Doe's the Chinese Government really believe that they have the right to object or threaten the President of the United States? They can't possible believe that they have any right or expectation that they can dictate who the President of the United States can or cannot meet with?
We know that two countries on this planet are not always going to agree on everything and we'll have those disagreements," Gibbs said.

Since President Obama has to be politically correct, I will respond for him. Here is my official response to the Government of China - BITE ME! or to quote the Chinese Government's standard line, "Stop Meddling in Our Internal Affairs". Every time the United States or any Government for that matter objects to China's human rights abuses or any other criticism of the Chinese Government "Stop meddling in our internal affairs" is the standard line of defense.
His Holiness the fourteenth Dalai Lama is arguably the most un-offensive human being on the planet. He is not a Head of State and does not advocate the separation of Tibet from China just greater religious freedom and autonomy. If any of you have ever had the pleasure to see interviews or speeches by the Dalai Lama you would most certainly agree that no matter what religious affiliation you may belong to or believe in His Holiness the Dalai Lama is truly interesting, engaging and quite obviously a man of peace who always talks about the importance of cultural and inter-religious harmony.
As reported by the Huffington Post - Every U.S. president for the last two decades has met with the Dalai Lama, who enjoys widespread support in the United States, and those visits are considered powerful signs of the American commitment to human rights. Obama told China's leaders last year that he would meet with the monk.
Is His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama such a subversive threat to the Chinese Government that they have to turn it into an international incident every time he meets with a head of state? Is this mild mannered man of peace with the ready laugh and permanent smile on his face so manipulative and powerful that he can turn entire countries against China? WOW! talk about insecurity. Just imagine a world wide army of Dalai Lama Zombies. This sounds way too paranoid to me. I wonder what Dr. Phil would say about that?
Ma Zhaoxu issued the remarks hours after Washington announced Obama would meet with the Tibetan spiritual leader at the White House on Feb. 18. "We urge the U.S. side to fully understand the high sensitivity of Tibet-related issues, honor its commitment to recognizing Tibet as part of China and opposing 'Tibet independence,'" Ma said. The U.S. should cancel the meeting "so as not to cause further damage to Sino-U.S. relations," Ma said in a statement. Ma did not specify what consequences would arise from such a meeting.
Per Wikipedia -The People's Liberation Army (PLA) defeated the Tibetan army in a battle at Chamdo on October 7, 1950. This attack marked the beginning of Beijing’s campaign to integrate Tibet into People's Republic of China. This operation is called a peaceful liberation of Tibet by the PRC government. Hmm, where have we heard the line "peaceful liberation" before? Was it the from the Soviet Union during the communist expansion era?
The Tibetan army did not invade or provoke China, The Chinese Army invaded Tibet, and ever since then has tried to dismantle and eradicate the Tibetan peoples religion and culture. As long as His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, and his followers are alive and well this goal of China's will never happen. I for one hope His Holiness the Dalai Lama lives a very, very long and productive life.
Before I start getting comments regarding my stance on this issue let me just say unequivocally that this is not a rant against China, I have nothing against China or the Chinese people as a whole. However, I do believe that in this particular issue The Chinese Government was wrong to invade Tibet, and their subsequent treatment of the Tibetan people.
President Obama, I applaud your stance and courage in this matter, and I am certain that you as the President of the United States and representative of the American people will welcome His Holiness the Dalai Lama with warm hospitality and the dignity and respect he so richly deserves.
President Obama should you read this (although I find it highly unlikely) please offer my regards and best wishes to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, not only from me, but from all the American people as well.
Regards,
Tom

Standing ovation!
ReplyDeleteSo there is no real comment here, except that you left out that this among a list of other "grievances" ...
ReplyDelete"Other grievances include US plans to sell arms to Taiwan, the row with the leading search engine Google over alleged cyber attacks, and US disappointment at China's failure to support it over climate change at Copenhagen and on sanctions against Iran...."
I also think that it is pretty silly to take petty threats from other countries who the president meets with. but should also read as a concern seeing that our country is in a huge amount of debt to china, that one day we may actually piss them off and they will sell our debt or worse yet stop buying our debt.
Fundude1213,
ReplyDeleteI was not creating a blog detailing all the grievances between the U.S. and China, that would be a very long list. However, I adamantly disagree with your assertion that we should be concerned with our debt to China. There is really nothing they can or would do. Attempting to destroy the U.S. economy and depriving them of the largest trading partner would lead to an economic meltdown in China as well as the rest of the world. I also believe that a deliberate attempt by China to bring down the U.S. economy would lead to serious concerns from virtually all other industrialized nations leading to further isolation of China.
Lastly, I never said we should takes China's threats seriously and certainly we are not. However just the fact that they have the gall to demand such a thing was what I was really addressing.
Thanks for your support and dialog.
