OK, I have never before blogged about politics or religion. As a disclaimer, I admit I am a liberal and don't have religious beliefs. However, with what I read this evening I can't help it. I am absolutely outraged. The american evangelist Pat Robertson made a statement today that goes beyond the realm of human decency. In the mddle of one of the largest unfolding disasters in the Northern Hemisphere in the past 200 years Pat Robertson was quoted with saying "Earthquake-ravaged Haiti has been "cursed" by a "pact to the devil." "Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it," he said on Christian Broadcasting Network's "The 700 Club." "They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you'll get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it's a deal." Robertson said that "ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other" You have got to be f***ing kidding me. We are all one family on this planet, the human family. When one of us suffers we all suffer. Tens if not hundreds of thousands of people have probably died and hundreds of thousands more are suffering. Somehow its their fault? Really? The bible talks about a "kind and loving God". So somehow he would inflict major suffering on one of the poorest countries on earth? for what? Because of some supposed pact with the devil that everyone in the country signed off upon? You have got to be kidding me. Racism in the name of God is still racism. Bigatry in the name of God is still Bigotry. This is a perfect example of whats evil with some people within our human family. Each of us needs to stand up and be counted and vocally reject this type of racism and bigotry, supposedly said in the name of God. Lets all stand up and lend our voices and more impotently actions, and reject this ignorant and racist philosophy and stand up for the good of humanity. Are you with me? Help the good people of Heiti with whatever you can, after all we are all brothers and sisters on a very small planet. They need everyones help right now.

I got here from the Coffee Party website, and I want to suggest that THIS should be a signature element of the CPM. Whether it's a constitutional amendment of any of a host of legislative fixes that have been proposed, we need to try to address this and I think it has the broad appeal that something like CPM needs to pull together people with disparate perspectives on more narrow policy. It also dovetails perfectly with the notion that the problem with government isn't that it's jsut a bad thing, like those TPM folks argue, but rather that it's been coopted (as have our corporations themselves). James Galbraith's "The Predator State" could be our bible!
